How to Measure Your AI Search Visibility

Most businesses have no idea whether ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews mention them. Here is how to measure AI search visibility, and when a tool is worth it.

Joshua Schubert Joshua Schubert

Measuring AI search visibility means checking whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews mention or cite your business when they answer the questions your customers ask. There are two practical ways to do it: a manual monthly check against a fixed list of buying questions, which costs nothing but time, and a dedicated tracking tool, which earns its price only once AI answers are a real source of leads. Start with the manual check.

The audience asking those questions is no longer niche. Roy Morgan research found 13.6 million people, equivalent to 58% of Australians aged 14+, used AI tools in an average four weeks in the March quarter of 2026, with 10.5 million Australians (45%) using ChatGPT (Roy Morgan). When that many of your customers ask an assistant before they ask you, whether the assistant knows you exist is a number worth tracking.

What does AI search visibility actually mean?

AI search visibility is how often, and how accurately, AI assistants bring up your business in their answers. It has three measurable layers: mentions, where the assistant names you; citations, where the answer links your site as a source; and share of voice, how often you appear across a fixed set of questions compared with everyone else who could. Traditional rank tracking measures none of the three.

Citations are the layer most worth watching, because assistants build answers from a short list of sources and each answer exposes which ones. When Pew Research Center analysed Google’s AI summaries, the vast majority (88%) cited three or more sources. Every one of those citation slots is visibility a business can win with the kind of answer-first, evidence-backed pages assistants actually quote.

Why do your Google rankings no longer tell the whole story?

Because a growing share of searches now ends in an AI answer instead of a click. The same Pew Research Center analysis found that users who encountered an AI summary clicked a traditional search result link in 8% of visits, while users who saw no summary clicked nearly twice as often, in 15% of visits. A page can hold its ranking while the traffic that ranking used to earn quietly drains away.

Ahrefs measured the same effect from the publisher’s side. Using December 2025 data, it found the presence of an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average clickthrough rate for the top-ranking page (Ahrefs).

“Regardless of your feelings about the utility and value of AI Overviews, it seems categorically true that they siphon away the majority of the clicks once available to top-ranking pages.”

Ryan Law, director of content marketing, Ahrefs (Ahrefs)

None of this shows up in a rank tracker. If your reporting stops at positions and sessions, you are watching the shrinking half of search and ignoring the growing half, and you will misread a visibility problem as a content problem.

How do you check your AI search visibility manually?

Build a fixed list of 15 to 25 questions your customers actually ask before they buy, put them to the major assistants once a month, and record three things for each answer: were you mentioned, were you cited as a source, and which businesses or websites filled the answer instead. A spreadsheet and two hours a month gives you a working baseline.

The discipline is in the fixity. Keep the question wording identical every month, ask in a fresh session so your own history does not colour the results, and cover the assistants your market actually uses rather than the ones you prefer. Record the sources each assistant cites, because that list is your practical to-do list: those are the pages winning the visibility you want.

Be honest about the limits. Assistant answers are not deterministic: the same question can produce a different answer tomorrow, so any single check is a sample, not a census. The value is in the trend. Three months of the same questions will tell you clearly whether you are absent, appearing, or gaining ground, and that is the decision-grade signal. It is the same approach we use on our own site: a fixed question set, asked on a schedule, with the answers recorded and compared month over month.

What do AI visibility tools actually measure?

AI visibility tools automate the manual protocol at scale. They run your question set against assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews on a schedule, then chart mentions, citations and share of voice over time. The better ones also show which sources each assistant leaned on for each answer, so you can see exactly which pages, directories and publications are soaking up the recommendations in your category.

You can supplement any tool with data you already own. Assistants that send a visitor to your site leave a referral trail in your analytics, so a segment that groups traffic from AI assistant domains gives you a free, deterministic floor under the fuzzier answer-sampling numbers: real people, arriving from real answers, doing measurable things on your site.

Tracking only tells you where you stand. Moving the numbers is generative engine optimisation work: answer-first structure, verifiable evidence, and the schema markup that makes your pages liftable into an answer. Measurement without that follow-through is a scoreboard for a game you are not playing.

When is a paid AI visibility tool worth the money?

Pay for a tool when the manual check has already proven the channel matters: AI referrals are showing up in your analytics, you hold mentions worth defending, and the monthly spreadsheet has become the bottleneck. If the assistants do not mention you at all yet, spend the money on becoming citable first. A tracker that reports zero every month is an expensive way to learn what one free session would have told you.

Price it the way you price any channel. Work out what one new client is worth, then ask whether the tool’s subscription is buying you decisions you could not make from the manual check and your own analytics. This is also the test worth applying to providers: it is the same answers-based reporting we tell people to demand when choosing a GEO agency. If a report shows you rankings but cannot show you answers, it is measuring the wrong thing.

Visibility work does not sit alone. The pages that win citations are the same pages that rank, convert and get quoted, which is why we treat GEO and organic search and content as one connected system rather than separate line items: each layer reinforces the next, and the results compound. If you want to know where your business stands in AI answers today, we can run a baseline and show you the gaps, and if the honest finding is that you do not need paid tooling yet, we will say so. Start a conversation or see how we price the work.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews mention or cite your business when answering questions in your category. It is measured in three layers: mentions (the assistant names you), citations (your site is linked as a source) and share of voice (how often you appear across a fixed question set over time).

How do I check whether ChatGPT mentions my business?

Ask it the questions your customers ask, not just your brand name. Build a list of 15 to 25 buying questions, run them monthly in a fresh session, and record whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited, and which sources each answer relies on. The month-to-month trend is the signal; any single answer is noise, because assistant responses vary between sessions.

Do AI visibility tools replace traditional SEO tools?

They measure different things, and most businesses tracking AI answers still need both. Rank trackers measure positions in traditional search results, while AI visibility tools sample assistant answers and report mentions, citations and share of voice. Because clickthrough falls sharply when AI summaries appear, ranking data alone now understates how visible or invisible your business really is.

How often should you measure AI search visibility?

Monthly is enough for most small businesses. Assistant answers vary from session to session, so more frequent manual checks mostly capture noise. Run the same question set in the same week each month, keep the wording identical, and judge the three-month trend. Move to weekly automated tracking only when AI answers have become a measurable source of enquiries.
